|He was bored, you see.|
For my part, I'm glad that one of the guys charged in the senseless murder of Chris Lane was white. Why?* Because then we can take race off the table and make the real issue - culture - the real issue.
What I mentioned in the "life will be cheap" portion of TEOTWAWKI is true. It is true almost to the point of being an historical inevitability. When the economy goes to hell, when the rule of law all crashes down, there will be a cultural and racial segregation in America, just as there has been in every decaying multicultural empire in history. Times of high anarchy are times of low trust, when trust is limited to very small groups, like families, clans, and the like. It is also a time of scapegoating.
But as I mentioned, many innocents will suffer.*** Race makes an easy division, but it does not make a useful one, because the real problem is culture, which maybe, sometimes, even usually, follows race. But not always.
It's been funny to watch the histrionics of NK Jemison or whoever that lunatic authoress is, worrying about the irrational violence of Aussies who would see her black skin.**** Surely she would say the same about Kansas - we're all freaking redneck racists, and especially the older Kansans. In her eyes we're all standing around with hemp ropes in our hands, and we'll sneak up and lynch her as soon as she's not looking. Maybe even twice. Except that if you go to a cattle auction here, you'll see a significant number of black farmers bidding on cattle. Their money is just as good as the white man's. Their overalls are just as faded as the white man's. And if they win the auction, they go home with cattle, just like the white man.
The difference is not race. It's culture. A black guy with 160 acres in Angus is a rancher. A black guy with tattoos, flashing gang signs and shooting innocents, is exactly what you're thinking. There is a difference, and the difference is not race.
* Besides the fact that my white privilege** means I won't be treated like this thug because I share his pallor.
** Unlike a liberal, I don't see white privilege as a problem, but as a solution, or at least as a model. The objective should not be to make white people feel guilty for being white, but to stop treating black people as guilty for being black.
*** This weighs on me and on my household, for obvious reasons.
**** I have to admit that I laughed when I read that my little Molly has the whitest name possible. Tabitha did not make the list, but fortunately her middle name, Kathryn, is on the list as well.
